And Old Feud Keeps Getting Nastier as T.O. Brings Up Donovan McNabb's DUIs and Sexual Harassment
They say that time heals all wounds. That as men age, their disposition softens. With the perspective of time, they gain wisdom. And they no longer have the energy to maintain that rage that once burned so hot inside them. When they were political, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson went 12 years without talking. Jefferson's supporters called Adams a “hideous hermaphroditical character,” and his called Jefferson “a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow.” But in their later years, as the last remaining Founding Fathers, they wrote constantly to each other as old friends. In fact, Adams's dying words were "Jefferson lives," as Jefferson too lay dying. 50 years to the day they'd both signed the Declaration of Independence.
Stories like that are nice. But stories about guys whose hatred for each other grows more vicious with each passing day are infinitely more fun. Which brings us to those other iconic, historical frienemies, Terrell Owens and Donovan McNabb.
Theirs is a hatred that goes back all the way to their time as teammates in Philly. A relationship that ended after Owens shot his way out of town after the 2005 season. And the 14 years since has only made this beef age like a top quality Prime Rib. Which heated up again a couple of weeks ago, after McNabb went on a Bleacher Report podcast and badmouthed Owens for the way he held his infamous attention-whoring, driveway gym holdout in '05:
McNabb flat out put the breakup of the Eagles Super Bowl team on Owens, saying:
“I thought that was the major distraction for us. He’s doing sit-ups, he’s doing push-ups, he’s playing basketball, he’s ordering pizza for the people out there, and we’re sitting there in training camp just like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ … This is like ‘Days Of Our Lives.’ It’s unbelievable. But that was something that kind of broke us up.”
And Owens was not about to sit this one out:
Rwawrrr!
And then Owens decided to fight podcast sass with podcast sass. First talking about how it all ended between them when he clapped at McNabb for ignoring him when he was open as the primary target on a play, only to be told to STFU in the huddle. Then getting really personal when he's asked why McNabb is bringing his name up now. I've cued this up to the 22:35 mark, when he starts to go all in. WARNING: Four guys talking all at once ahead:
If you don't have the time or patience to listen, here's a brief summary. T.O. says that while everyone thinks he's a problem and McNabb isn't, he'd like you to know that his old quarterback:
- Picked up some DUIs (plural)
- Got fired from ESPN for sending sexually harassing text messages
- Did so while he was married
- Suggests that the reason McNabb was puking in Super Bowl XXXIX is that he'd been drinking
Bro Code, Terrell Owens's Hall of Fame ass. He's getting personal. We can only hope that McNabb answers back soon and Owens responds and we get treated to the two of them locked in mortal combat until the end of time. All you former teammates who clashed during your playing days, you're on notice. This is how you conduct a beef as you get older.
