ICYMI: Two Disney Classics Are Getting Live-Action Remakes
I'll say outright that I truly don't give a fuck about either of these movies. Both of them came out before we landed troops in Normandy, and don't really hold a place in either me or my parent's hearts. The great thing about growing up in the late 90's/early 2000's is that I had a non-stop barrage of Disney renaissance and Pixar movies to pull from. No offense to the orphan Bambi or the lying Italian puppet, but they just can't compete vs 'The Lion King', 'Hercules', 'Toy Story' etc. Actually, I take that back, offense intended.
From a critical standpoint, I feel a very specific way about these Disney live-action remakes. At the end of the day, these are always going to be cash grabs. That's just a fact. However, if a director thinks that they can at least add something entertaining or new, then I'm all for it. An example of where I think this worked is 'Aladdin'. There was a new sort of spin and feel to it, which at least made it entertaining to watch. Where this didn't work is 'The Lion King', which was just a shot-for-shot remake of the animated movie. We know that Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) is going to direct Pinocchio, and I don't think he would sign on unless he had something fresh in mind. Hopefully it's good fresh and not 'Welcome to Marwen' fresh. Yuck. I just don't see the appeal for either of these properties.
