Man Becomes First Person Ever To Run A Marathon In Under Two Hours
I’m not going to lie, I don’t give a shit about the marathon. I only blogged this so I could use a picture of O’Day as the thumbnail because I knew it would make my desk mates laugh. But while we’re here, congrats to Eliud Kipchoge on the accomplishment. 26.2 miles in 1:59:40 equals out to about a 4:34 minute mile. That’s thirteen miles per hour for TWO HOURS STRAIGHT. He didn’t do it in Boston…but he still did it, which is a first for all of humanity. The only bad part is that the record technically doesn’t stand because he wasn’t on a “record eligible course.” Meaning the Vienna Marathon didn’t follow standard competition rules for pacing and fluids. You can read more about that here.
Regardless, all things considered, I watched that entire Eliud interview and he seems completely fine. Wasn’t tired, wasn’t hobbled over, just sat there and gave the interview like nothing happened. The coolest part was that it was his family’s first time watching him run and he broke the record. Didn’t even poop his pants either.
Imagine if they had shown up to any of the other thousand marathons he’s run in the past? Guy probably would’ve broken the record years ago. Oh well. Congrats, Eliud. Don’t spend all your winnings in one place.
