Breaking Bad Prequel Focused On Saul Goodman "Better Call Saul" Gets The Green Light
USA Today – AMC has signed up for a Breaking Bad spinoff. Better Call Saul, in discussions for months, will be a one-hour “prequel” to the acclaimed drama that will “focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer,” the network said in a joint statement with Sony Pictures Television. The show’s title is the cheesy attorney’s ad slogan. White, of course, is the teacher-turned-meth-dealer played by Emmy-winning Bryan Cranston. Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk, has been a regular character since the second season, and was created by Bad writer Peter Gould, who will produce the new show. In lengthy discussions with creator Vince Gilligan, AMC spent time searching for the right tone for the new show, president Charlie Collier has said, while Sony privately mulled plans to shop it elsewhere if AMC had passed. No word on when the show will hit the air, though it’s not likely before the second half of next year.
Well all the rumors have finally been confirmed. Personally I think Saul Goodman is the perfect secondary character. Charismatic character who brings some laughs and levity to a very dark show. Will I watch this? Of course. Do I think it will be anywhere near the level of Breaking Bad? For sure not. But I’ll follow Vince Gilligan wherever he goes.
The one thing I think was very smart was making it a prequel. However the Walter White saga ends, is exactly how it should finish. There’s nothing more to that story or those characters after the next 3 episodes. Just leave that masterpiece as is. Give me the back story of the sleaziest slimiest lawyer and how he joined forces with Huell so I can get a little taste of Breaking Bad for a couple more seasons.
PS – Officially means Saul Goodman is no longer safe these final episodes. He can die just like anybody else can now.
