A School District In Texas Is Removing The "D" From Their Grading Scale To Reduce The Pressure On The Kids, And In Three Years They're Getting Rid Of The "C-"
KATY, Texas (KTRK) -- In a board meeting last month, Katy ISD approved changes to its class ranking and district policy, which includes removing the "D" letter grade from its grading system. Here's how the new system works: An A is 90% and above. A B is 80% to 89%. Before a C was 75% to 79%. And a D was 70% to 74%. Now 70% to 74% is a C minus.
Did I just wake up from a decade-long coma or something? Because I was under the impression that the standard grading scale was A, B, C, D, and F. So for this school district to be getting rid of the D on their grading scale, that means that they already got rid of the F years ago. What……?
I hate to be an old man yelling at a cloud here, but this is absolutely ridiculous. When I was in school (which was only like 8 years ago), we had a 7 point scale. And a 93% was only an A minus! You had to get a 95% to get a true A, and a 70% was a solid D. Are we just giving away grades now? Someone needs to explain themselves!!
Here is the district superintendent on the decision:
"I think the students do put a lot of pressure on themselves and I think they sometimes engage in some unhealthy competition in trying to earn that certain GPA. Whereas, we would rather them approach their high school career with balance in mind," said Leslie Haack, Deputy Superintendent Katy ISD.
Oh. My. God.
Unhealthy competition? Folks we're not talking about who can bong the most original Four Lokos in a row here. We're talking about HIGH SCHOOL. If you receive an F on your report card it is not because of the pressure or even because you're dumb, it's because you didn't do ANYTHING. I'd argue it's harder to fail than it is to get an A. But apparently, the pressure of doing the minimal amount of assignments to pass a class has cracked these kids. And the adults, too.
And if you think that the fact you can no longer receive D's and F's is still not enough to reduce the insurmountable pressure these kids are under, then I have good news for you:
In three years, students will no longer receive a C minus, they will only receive a C.
I have officially seen it all. This is the worst school district in the world. And this is happening in Texas?? This is a Massachusetts idea. Or maybe Rhode Island. But Texas? I expected better.
I didn't know it snowed in Texas!!
