What Movies Are Releasing This Weekend? (August 9th, 2019)
There is a handful of movies that are hitting theaters this weekend as you read this. Unfortunately, we’ve hit that weird part of the year where there is a lull in movie quality. Nothing hitting theaters carry much of a “wow” factor, but if you’re looking for something to go see, I have you covered…

‘The Kitchen’ received a pretty big marketing push, which isn’t surprising considering the fact it has a cast of big names, including Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss, Tiffany Haddish, Dohmnall Gleeson and Common. By all early accounts, unfortunately, this movie is terrible. What is it with mob movies and the 2010’s? For some reason, this genre absolutely falls flat with nearly every new release. It’s a shame too because Melissa McCarthy has shown that she has some great range with dramatic roles. I’m seeing it this weekend for our Lights Camera Barstool review next week and I can’t say I am all that excited.
JEFF’S VERDICT: Pass on this
LIMITED RELEASE

Are we seeing a Shia LaBeouf renaissance? A Shia LaBeouf resurgence? Whatever it is, everything is coming up Shia right now. This past week he released a trailer for his new autobiographical movie titled ‘Honey Boy’…
The trailer really got people talking, and now it leads right up into the (limited) release of his newest movie in ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’. Reviews for this movie are flying in and they’re amazing. it’s a re-telling of the story of Huckleberry Finn and considered to be one of the feel-good stories of 2019. While I can’t stand living in New York City sometimes, one of the perks of living there is the availability of limited-release movies. I can’t wait to see ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ and it sounds like everyone should jump on the chance to see it as soon as possible.
JEFF’S VERDICT: See it in theaters (PICK OF THE WEEK)
Based on the popular, and notorious, children’s horror book series… The shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large in the small town of Mill Valley for generations. It’s in a mansion that young Sarah Bellows turns her tortured life and horrible secrets into a series of scary stories. These terrifying tales soon have a way of becoming all too real for a group of unsuspecting teens who stumble upon Sarah’s spooky home. (via Google)
Probably the most anticipated release of the weekend (why do horror movies come out not around Halloween?), I actually already reviewed ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ and you can watch that here or below…
This is definitely a horror movie aimed at kids, but if there is anything to see this weekend, it’s Guillermo Del Toro’s new vision.
JEFF’S VERDICT: See it in theaters
Denny Swift is a Formula One race car driver who understands that the techniques needed on the racetrack can also be used to successfully navigate everyday life. Besides his career, Denny has three loves of his life — his beautiful wife, their young daughter and his best friend, which is a dog that wants to be reincarnated into a human. (via Google)
An on-purpose tear-jerking emotional movie featuring Kevin Costner as the voice of a dog? ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ is the early contender for “Cry Porn” Movie of the Year. Funny enough, it features Milo Ventiiglia, one of the stars of the “Cry Porn” TV Show of the Century ‘This Is Us’. Based on a 2008 book the same name, this movie is being chalked up as over-the-top and just a vessel to make audiences weep with emotion. I really, really do not like that and those types of cheap tricks, especially in a movie filled with good actors and actresses, turn me off big time. With all of that said, ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ has early high marks from audiences, so it might still be worth watching eventually.
JEFF’S VERDICT: Wait for streaming
The inspirational true story of Brian Banks, an all-American high school football star who finds his life upended when he’s wrongly convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. Despite the lack of evidence, Banks gets railroaded through a broken justice system and sentenced to a decade of prison and probation. Years later, with the support of Justin Brooks and the California Innocence Project, Banks fights to reclaim his life and fulfill his dreams of playing in the NFL. (via Google)
Another movie with a middle-of-the-road critic rating but high audience rating, ‘Brian Banks’ is the telling of the unbelievable, uplifting story about the real-life person by the same name. I would suggest you look this story up and get details from interviews with Brian Banks before going and seeing the movie. It sounds as though ‘Brian Banks’ is mostly formulaic, which is disappointing to hear, but that audiences don’t seem to mind too much. Something like this, even if the movie may not be perfectly made, deserves to be seen on the big screen.
JEFF’S VERDICT: See it in theaters
Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle, nothing could prepare Dora for her most dangerous adventure yet — high school. Accompanied by a ragtag group of teens and Boots the monkey, Dora embarks on a quest to save her parents while trying to solve the seemingly impossible mystery behind a lost Incan civilization.
This is a kids movie, that’s for sure. But I have to include it because, honestly, it looks like they did a better job with this than most movies coming out this month. If you have kids or younger siblings, you should bring them and be a good influence. Isabela Moner (‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’) is also set to be a rising star and Danny Trejo is in it and he’s a fucking hero. Please, also, don’t forget to avoid this criminally horny weirdo movie reviewer.
