Who Should Play Bill Clinton In The Clinton-Lewinsky Scandal Series From 'People v. OJ' Creators?
FX said today that the third season of its award-winning limited series franchise American Crime Story will center on the sex scandal that rocked the Bill Clinton presidency. Sarah Paulson, after winning an Emmy for her turn as Marcia Clark in ‘American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson’, will return to the anthology as Linda Tripp, while ‘Booksmart’s Beanie Feldstein will play Monica Lewinsky and Annaleigh Ashford will play Paula Jones. Lewinsky will also be a producer on the limited series, titled ‘Impeachment: American Crime Story’.
This is fantastic news. ‘Impeachment’ is already one of my most-anticipated pieces of entertainment for the year 2020. I recently re-binged ‘The People v. O.J.’ and remembered that it is absolute TV gold. I’d venture to say that it is one of the all-time great TV events or mini-series.
The O.J. story is something everyone knows about to at least a small degree. The interest in the show was so heavy because it combined nostalgia for those who were alive during the trial and intrigue for those who wanted to know more of the details. The movie dove deep and boasted an insane cast that also closely resembled their real-life counterparts…
The show was a phenomenon, and rightfully so, it played right into the “nostalgia” mentality that has a firm grip on the entertainment world right now.
This all circles back to why I am so excited for the Clinton-Lewinsky Scandal version of this show. It plays into the nostalgia and can also provide so much more insight than the basic details everyone knows (“I did not have sexual relations,” the blue dress, etc.). The deep dive into this story is going to make noise and get people incredibly invested. ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’ was the second season of this franchise, and it was pretty decent, but it didn’t really play into the same things that got people going for the O.J. story.
Much like the original season’s basis (The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson), ‘Impeachment’ will be based on a book from Jeffrey Toobin (A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President). Monica Lewinsky will serve as a producer, so I’d imagine everyone is curious to see what kind of an angle the show takes. The cast is already shaping up too…
If it’s a Ryan Murphy jaunt, it has to have Sarah Paulson. Those are the rules. Linda Tripp was a confidante and friend of Lewinsky and recorded their conversations in which Lewinsky revealed details about her relationship with President Clinton. I would venture to guess that Tripp will be one of the main focuses of the movie, more so than Lewinsky, just like Paulson’s portrayal of Marcia Clark in ‘The People v. O.J.’ Beanie Feldstein and Annaleigh Ashford are also great castings.
One of the big remaining questions is this: who will play Bill Clinton?
‘FRIENDS’ alum David Schwimmer was a fantastic Robert Kardashian…
JUICE! JUICE! J U I C E! ¡ƎƆI∩ſ JUICE!
So why not dip back into the ‘FRIENDS’ well and cast Matthew Perry?
This works perfectly for me. I love it. Hell, go ahead and cast David Schwimmer as Al Gore.
The show films in February and releases next Fall (right before the 2020 Election, so the hype will only be louder). There’s a chance it is bad, but I just don’t see it. Even the “corny” parts of ‘The People v. O.J.’ (JUICE!, Travolta, etc.) were amazing. The “whodunnit?” style potential may not be as big as it was for O.J., but I expect the Clinton-Lewinsky version to do the same tactics with getting the viewer to ponder how the case should have turned out.
