Who Said It: Kanye West On "Yeezus" Or Lucille Bluth

Pop EW – Kanye West loves comparing himself to great talents — Michael Jordan, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, even Jesus H. Christ. But if you really listen to Yeezus‘s endlessly quotable “I Am a God” — subtle, ‘Ye — you’ll realize that West’s true kindred spirit is none other than Lucille Bluth. Think about it. If Arrested Development‘s matriarch ever deigned to write a rap song, don’t you think she, too, would spend the duration commanding a subordinate to “hurry up with my damn massage” and “in a French-ass restaurant/hurry up with my damn croissants”? Like Kanye, she’s a wealthy narcissist well-versed in the language of Swaghili; like Lucille, Kanye probably thinks a single banana costs $10. And the similarities go beyond “I Am a God.” Look deeper into the wilds of Yeezus, and you’ll find even more lines that could have come straight from Lucille’s patrician mouth. Try to guess which of these 14 sentences are Kanye lyrics, and which are quotes from Arrested Development — figuring out the answers may be trickier than you think.

1. “They ordered champagne, but still look thirsty.”

2. “I’ll be out on parole by the time you work up a tear.”

3. “That coat cost more than your house!”

4. “You remember where we first met? Okay, I don’t remember where we first met.”

5. “Everybody wants to live at the top of the mountain.”

6. “If I don’t get run out by Catholics, here come some conservative Baptists.”

7. “Where’s my maid? ROBOT!”

8. “You love me when I’m hungover.”

9. “Who let that black [bleep] in?”

10. “A sea of waiters, and no one will take a drink order.”

11. “Go and grab the reporters so I can smash their recorders.”

12. “I’d rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona.”

13. “$2000 bag with no cash in your purse.”

14. “WHORE!”

Kanye Lyrics: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 13

Lucille Quotes: 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14

Hilarious. The cockiest, most arrogant black man in the history of rap vs. the meanest, drunkest 70 year old white woman in TV history. The fact that these are even comprable sums up Kanye West. He’s basically like Lebron. There’s no denying his talent (pre-Yeezus) but every time he opens his mouth you’re just like “Goddamit you’re a dickhead.”

8 and 9 threw me for a loop. I thought for sure “You love me when I’m hungover” would be Lucille and “who let the black [bleep] in” would be Kanye but turns out thats flip flopped. And for the record “A sea of waiters, and no one will take a drink order.” when Lucille is surrounded by Mexicans in suits at the Latin TV Awards is one of her top 3 quotes ever.
