Chris Broussard Questioned Kevin Durant's 2 Rings. Kevin Durant Surprisingly Did Not Appreciate That
This is a conversation that has been bubbling ever since KD went out against the Rockets. Chris Broussard isn’t the only one pondering this out loud. What happens if Golden State wins a Championship without KD contributing towards their last nine wins? Unfair or not people are definitely going to give Durant a ton of shit if Steph, Klay, and Draymond carry the load the rest of the way and bring home their fourth ring. This was part of the risk with KD signing in Golden State. So far, through two years, he’s walked away with two Finals MVPs. And people still don’t give him as much credit as other Finals MVPs throughout history. But they’ve certainly allowed him more credit up to this point. I think Broussard is right: people will look back on Durant’s first two rings in a lesser light if he doesn’t play again this season and the Warriors still win. Right now Golden State is 1-1 in the Finals without KD, 2-0 with him. He’s made them unbeatable. But if all of a sudden they’re 2-1, with a 73 win season mixed in there, all of a sudden it starts looking less favorable for KD. I don’t agree with it, he’s on a short list of multi-time Finals MVP winners, but that’s just the reality of the situation. And for a guy who does give a shit about his legacy, that sucks to have looming over your head right now.
Is it his worst nightmare?
That’s the most condescending “buddy” in the history of the written word. Durant never once says it wouldn’t suck. Worst nightmare feels like a bit of a stretch. What about a nightmare where a bunch of spiders are in your house, and they can talk and they’re also 5-foot tall, they’re not even there to attack you they’ve just set up shop and for some reason they only talk about politics in Armenia, but they get like really serious about it so you’re worried there might be a brawl you have to break up or if you potentially say the wrong thing they can all turn on you and put you in a web cocoon of doom. That’s a goddamn nightmare. Making millions of dollars and winning your third straight ring with two Finals MVPs already in tow? Not as bad a nightmare when you really start to think about it. It also helps to have good teammates in a scenario like this.
This is why it’s hard to pick against the Warriors no matter what. Where injuries coupled with the most mild of controversies would derail a lot of other contenders, there are guys in that locker room that don’t give a shit. Andre Iguodala is in Golden State for one reason: rings. No one would ever questions his legacy or took him to task for signing with Golden State so he’s able to see these questions as the unnecessary distraction that they are. Which, for a guy like Durant who’s read every thing that’s ever been written about him (hey Kevin, how’s it hanging, come on Mickstape please) is immensely important. Other teams would let that awkwardness fester out in the open like a wet fart and never address it.
PS – Wont someone out there PLEASE think of who this affects the most?
