One Thing You Can't Argue About Is Veep Having A Perfect Series Finale

I know everyone gets caught up in Game of Thrones. Don’t get me wrong I love the show too. But, I’m here to remind everyone of Veep. I blogged before that it was having a better last season than Thrones despite being overlooked. I continue to be right about that. That’s just a fact.

Another fact? It had a perfect series finale last night.

Veep finished up a seven season run as arguably the best comedy of the 2000s. It’s that damn good. I seriously recommend watching it if you haven’t yet. I don’t know why you wouldn’t. You trust me, right?

The beauty of Veep has been the writing. There are so many characters – obviously highlighted by JLD as Selina Meyer. But, the way the writers get the timing and subtly of the jokes right every episode is what makes the show so damn good. They intertwine all these stories and nothing seems forced or skipped. Can’t say that about another show.

(SPOILERS AHEAD)

So let’s start with Selina. Last night was exactly how you finish a series with a main character. It went full circle with the fight to get back to the White House. You had all the characters coming together with Tom James, Jonah Ryan, etc. You had Selina go from wanting to fight for people in the early episodes to saying fuck it and do whatever it takes to win the nomination. She also dropped this line:

That all led to the final scene with Selina’s death. It wrapped up the show exactly how you should. Jokes from early seasons being brought back up. Gary at the casket. Dan with a young hot wife. Jonah being impeached. It showed that shows don’t have to end with all nice and feel good stuff. Selina sold out her most loyal friend and partner in order to be President.

One of the best storylines though was the development of Richard. It turns out he was a historic two-term President, but he was still Richard. The salute at the casket next to his wife was laugh out loud funny. His relationship with Jonah to his relationship with Dan as his character grew was one of the best character arcs I can remember. It did show that there is some good in the world (of the show) vs the darkness of Selina. It was lowkey, but all what the show was about.

In the end we saw one of the best comedies of this era come to an end with great writing. So in a world where we are arguing about series finales, Veep needs to be listed as one of the best.

And who could forget all the jokes. I’d kill for a Jonah/Richard spinoff because they were two of my favorite characters ever.
