Those Goofy Canadians Deserves A Winner

We all have those friends who love to do something that they’re just absolutely horrible at. Maybe you have a friend who sucks ass at playing basketball but he always decides to show up to Saturday/Sunday morning pick-up games. Maybe you have a friend who sucks ass at driving but always offers to drive when the squad is going on a trip somewhere. Maybe you have a friend who sucks ass at cooking but he’s always inviting people over for dinner or a barbecue or something. It’s just something that happens in life. People find things that they love but unfortunately, they’re just not any good at it.

That’s pretty much Canadians and the NHL right now, and it’s been that way since 1993.

Now before I keep going, I know for a fact that there are going to be countless of you Canucks out there who decide to bring up the fact that the majority of NHL rosters are comprised of Canadian-born players. I get it. We all get it. Nobody is saying that Canadians don’t make for great hockey players. But when it comes time to put together a team of their own? Well holy shit, boys, Canada just can’t figure it out.

All 3 Canadian teams that made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year have been bounced in the 1st round. The Calgary Flames were the top seed in the West. The Winnipeg Jets were in the Western Conference Final last year. The Toronto Maple Leafs went out and spent $11M AAV on John Tavares in the summer and were playing in the final year of Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on their ELCs. This was the year that I thought Canada finally had a chance to get their maple syrup covered hands on the Stanley Cup again. I thought there was a legitimate chance that a Canadian market team would win the Cup for the first time in over 25 years. But it’s not even May and there are no Canadian teams left in the hunt anymore.

It’s just sad. It breaks my heart. Canadians love hockey more than they love life itself. They live and breathe for the sport of hockey. But every year in the month of June, they have to wait around for somebody from their hometown to bring the Cup back after winning it with an American team. As somebody who has had to watch countless ex-Flyers bring the Cup back to this area after winning it with other teams, I have nothing but sympathy for our neighbors up North. They deserve a winner of their own. But that might be a little much to ask for if they can’t even make it out of the first round.
