What's The Furthest You Would Travel For Beer League Sports?

So I’m currently playing in a spring men’s lacrosse league. I know what you’re probably saying to yourself right now. “Wait a minute, Jordie. Wasn’t I literally just reading a blog about you tearing your ACL less than 7 months ago? And now you’re already back to playing?”. The answer to that question is yes, but don’t tell my doctor that. Sometimes your love of the game is too much to be held back by some medical expert’s opinion on whether or not you are cleared to play. But that’s not the point of this blog.

This is a Sunday league. And for the most part, every field we play on is about a 30-45 minute drive from my apartment. Not too bad or anything like that. It’s certainly not ideal but it’s not like I’m spending half of my Sunday in the car. However, this upcoming Sunday we have a game scheduled against a team from Baltimore. Which leads me to ask the question, What is the furthest you would travel for beer league sports?

Now I should probably specify this question a little bit. Because there is certainly a difference between traveling for a beer league tournament as opposed to just one game. If you’re traveling somewhere for an extended stay, I really don’t think you can put a limit on how far you’d go. Could be cross state, could be cross country, could be international. As long as you have a full weekend booked and have a chance to take home a championship? That’s an easy decision.

But when it’s just for one game? A quick trip, game over, turn around and come back home? I guess it really just depends on how much you love the game.

Obviously there are a ton of factors to take into consideration here. Things like day of the week, time of the day, whether or not your team has a legitimate chance of winning or not, etc. etc.

I’m a Beer League Hero. Everybody knows that. But even I’d say you should probably cap off a single game trip at maybe 2-hours each way. For a tournament? No limit at all. Go nuts. But for one game? Yeah, maybe just pay the team a little extra to come to you so you don’t have to do the traveling.
