David Backes Plays Hero In The Shootout And The Boston Bruins Have Won SEVEN STRAIGHT
Reilly Smith tied things up with 1:36 left in the 1st. What’s that? The Bruins letting up a goal late in the period again? Sure is. The former Bruin made it 1-1.
It was tight checking in the 2nd period, Bruins again, could not convert on two PP opportunities to retake the lead and we were on to the 3rd.
27 seconds later Nate Schmidt turned Charlie McAvoy inside out and tied the game. Again, the Bruins refuse to maintain leads and it is infuriating.
OT:
A stupid too many men penalty almost cost the B’s in OT, but big saves and a strong kill (and a Bergy backcheck) saved their bacon.
SO:
Marchand, Heinen, and Krug were unable to beat Fleury to end it.
It would take 5 more rounds to determine a winner as both goalies were making great saves, but finally David Backes became the hero.
News, notes and quotes:
- After having just 2 points in his previous 13 games. DeBrusk is now riding high on a 5 game goal streak (10 point) streak. He has really stepped up with David Pastrnak being out of the lineup. SO goal was filth too.
- 5 goals in 7 games for Brad Marchand who unleashed an absolute rocket.
- 1st career NHL assist for Karson Kuhlman on DeBrusk’s goal.
- PP 0 for 3 tonight. Needs fine tuning.
- It took just 27 seconds for Vegas to answer after Brad Marchand’s go-ahead goal in the 3rd. INFURIATING. I don’t know how many times I can say it, this team just gives up leads so easily and then has to work even harder to get it back.
- Besides the SO game-winner, thought David Backes asserted himself well tonight. Some big hits, didn’t look as slow as he usually does. (Mean, but true).
- What a game from Jaro Halak, though. 31 saves. He kept the B’s in it all game and came up with some huge saves in the OT and SO. Bruins goalies have been excellent in this stretch run.
- In case you’ve been living on a rock, the Bruins traded Ryan Donato and a conditional 5th round pick to the Minnesota Wild for Charlie Coyle. He’ll be in the lineup on Saturday.
- 12 games with a point, perfect 4 for 4 on the road trip. Time to finish it off in St. Louis.
Here’s the Periscope from tonight’s game.
It was a great night to win a hockey game. Charlie Coyle era begins right now.
p.s Dave if you’re reading this I know this isn’t a great headline but my brain is fried and I have so much adrenaline I can barely type.
