According to Jon Heyman, The Yankees and Marlins Have Discussed a Gary Sanchez-JT Realmuto Trade
The Marlins are busy talking to teams about J.T. Realmuto, the de facto best catcher in the game. The Astros, Dodgers and Yankees are among many teams that have showed interest. Houston is seen as a possible destination, but as of Tuesday, Marlins people denied the Astro were in the lead.
The Astros are believed willing to include Kyle Tucker, who is the type of lefthanded hitter the Marlins like, but probably not top pitching prospect Forrest Whitley. The issue with the Yankees’ talks apparently is that they still hold Gary Sanchez in high enough regard that they have resisted offering other top pieces in a package with Sanchez. The Marlins, who are run by ex-Yankee types (Derek Jeter, Gary Denbo) seem to like Sanchez as well but are hoping for a major package for Realmuto.
I might be in the minority here, but I don’t like any part of this. For starters, Gary Sanchez (25 years old) is under team control for four more years, and isn’t even arbitration eligible until 2020. J.T. Realmuto will be a free agent in two years. Obviously Realmuto is coming off a career year and has risen the ranks of the best hitting catchers in baseball. Last year he hit 21 bombs and knocked in 74 runs with an .825 OPS. Gary well, he had a disaster season that we will not speak of ever again. I’m going to die on the Gary Sanchez train until it falls off a cliff and explodes into a fiery blaze. Many people have given up on Gary after one bad season and it just doesn’t make sense to me. Do we not remember the two months in 2016 where he almost won the rookie of the year (should have) and the 2017 where he hit the most homers ever as a Yankee catcher? That all gets washed away because of one bad season? Fuck outta here. Game 2 of the ALDS in Boston put belief back in me that he can be that monster once again.
Yes, Gary is a lazy fuck behind the plate. It’s not great, but everything else he does when he’s on supersedes that in my mind. His pitch framing and game-calling is extremely underrated. His offense is off the charts. His arm is a cannon. When he has everything going he is BY FAR the best catcher in baseball. I have faith that the bad man is coming back in 2019. Now we have this JT Realmuto rumor from Heyman, which came out of seemingly nowhere. It’s also from FanCred sports whatever that is so take it with a grain of salt. Jon says that Miami asked for top prospects along with Gary in a deal for Realmuto and Cashman balked. If you ask me, I’d rather four years of Gary than two years of JT. Especially if that includes surrendering top prospects along with that. Fuck that, I believe in Gary and I’m ready for a big bounce back redemption year. I don’t see Cashman giving up on Gary’s potential just like that. He’s staying.
Believe in Gary. I am Gary. You are Gary. We are Gary.
