Movie Trailer Roundup

1. Rocketman

This looks to be a lot more ‘Across the Universe’ than ‘Walk the line’ which turns me off a bit. I like the subject material, and cast, though! It stars Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), and Jamie Bell (Jumper). Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle) is directing off a Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) script.

2. Holmes and Watson

I’m not too thrilled for the reunion of this all-star duo based on this trailer, but I refuse to pass final judgment based off the first trailer. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly (Step Brothers), Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter), Lauren Lapkus (Jurassic World) and Rebecca Hall (The Town) star in this Etan Cohen (Idiocracy) written and directed film.

3. Vice

Fuckkkkkkk yes baby!!! I’ve been waiting for this forever, even way back when it was labeled “Backseat”. Such an incredible cast and writing/directing crew coming together for an interesting, albeit dark, story in American history is basically made for me to get excited over. It stars Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), Amy Adams (Man of Steel), Steve Carell (The Office), Sam Rockwell (3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Thicc boi Jesse Plemons (Game Night), Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs the World), Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire), Tyler Perry (The Tyler Perry Expanded Universe) and Bill Camp (The Night Of). Adam McKay (The Other Guys, The Big Short) wrote and directed.

4. On The Basis of Sex (Trailer #2)

This didn’t do much more for me compared to the first trailer, so I’ll just reiterate my thoughts from that one. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a hugely important historical figure in U.S. Judiciary history, and I’m not sure if this movie is going to do her justice (no pun intended) based off this trailer. It stars Felicity Jones(Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Theory of Everything) and co stars Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name, The Social Network), Justin Theroux (The Leftovers, Mulholland Drive), Kathy Bates(Misery, Titanic), and Sam Waterston (Law & Order). I love Jones, but her American accent didn’t blow me away. The hip soundtrack really didn’t match the vibe of the subject either, which was sort of off-putting. Mimi Leder is directing (The Leftovers, Deep Impact) off first time writer Daniel Stiepleman’s script. I like Leder’s resume a lot, and hope the final product is more polished than this.

5. Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse (Final Trailer)

I know the superhero movie market is wayyyyy too oversaturated right now, but I think this is going to differentiate itself from the pack both in its stylistic strides and unique storytelling. The cast is great, featuring Shameik Moore (Dope) Jake Johnson (New Girl), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins, Wolverine), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Lily Tomlin (Nashville), Nic Cage (THE BEEEEEES) and John Mulaney (Big Mouth). It’s director Bob Persichetti‘s first project, but he was involved in plenty of animated projects before.

6. Tiger

This movie is inspired by the true story of Pardeep Singh Nagra, a practicing Sikh who was banned from boxing because he refused to shave his beard on religious grounds. Not that I’m a huge boxing guy or anything, but I’d never even heard of this story before. Now that I have, I’m happy it’s getting a spotlight because issues of religious freedom, racial stereotyping, and general stereotyping shittiness sometimes get glossed over, especially for the American-Indian community. Sikhs in particular have been victims of an insane number of hate crimes following 9/11. This movie stars Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2),  Prem Singh (Breakaway) and Janel Parrish (Pretty Little Liars).

7. The Upside

I’ve been through the ringer of Kevin Hart fatigue, and I was reaaaaal hesitant when I saw his mug on the thumbnail. I’m pleasantly surprised, though! It looks like a more subtle comedic role for Hart with some real emotional depth alongside a veteran of that sentiment in Bryan Cranston. Besides those two, Nicole Kidman also stars in this Niel Burger (Limitless) film. It was released at TIFF and currently has a 55% on RT.

8. Mary Queen of Scots (Trailer #2)

This looks to be maybe one of the best tellings of the infamous cousin rivalry between Mary and Elizabeth I, one of the greatest monarchs in English history. Saoirse Ronan (Ladybird), Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) star with the supporting cast of Jack Lowden (Dunkirk), David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Guy Pearce (Memento). Josie Rourke has the wheel on a Beau Willimon (Ides of March) script which is extremely promising all around. I would be absolutely shocked if this doesn’t get nominated in at least 2 categories.

9. The Mule

I thought he had retired, but here he is starring in a movie with a yuuuuge cast. Old Man Sicario! It stars Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino), Bradley Cooper (Guardians of the Galaxy), Michael Peña (Ant Man), Laurence Fishburne (Predators), Clifton Collins Jr. (Westworld) annnnd the return of Noel Gugliemi!

10. Welcome Home

You lucky bastard, Aaron Paul. Not much to work off of in this trailer other than Paul got cucked and decided to go to a rich handsome Italian’s villa to repair his relationship for some reason. Emily Ratajkowski (I Feel Pretty) and Riccardo Scamarcio (John Wick 2) star in this George Ratliff (Joshua) movie.

11. Overlord (Trailer #2)

You get a little more oomph out of this trailer than the first one, as well as more context on the nazi zombie experiment. It stars Jovan Adepo (Fences), Jacob Anderson (Game Of Thrones), Pilou Asbæk (Game Of Thrones), and Iain De Caestecker (Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D). Sort of a ragtag crew, but I’ve enjoyed all of their individual performances on TV shows. Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) is directing with Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Captain Phillips) and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) having done the script. Those are two good screenwriters and a relative unknown director, but the bigger draw is that J.J. Abrams is producing.
