Auston Matthews Is The Latest NHL Player To Be Featured In GQ, Awfully Weird Timing Too
Last week it was Connor McDavid, this week it is Auston Matthews featured in GQ. Same type of interview. A simple Q and A about what they are like off the ice, what they like to do and wear and who some of their influences are.
My biggest takeaway from the interview is how different Matthews and McDavid come across. McDavid kind of seemed like he wanted to stay under the radar with his fashion enough just to not get chirped by the boys. But like I mentioned in the McDavid blog, you don’t need to dress nice in Edmonton. It’s Edmonton. Toronto is big city, big dick swinging. If you’re in the NHL you can’t be walking around in anything that isn’t custom.
Matthews on the other hand seemed like he wants to be the Russell Westbrook of the NHL. He even named him as one of his fashion influences.
Is there anyone you would consider a style influence?
Russell Westbrook. I don’t know whether I would wear everything he does. But, he’s got his own thing and I respect that a lot. He’s different from everyone else and he’s unique and has his own way of going about things and I really like that. I’m a big basketball fan as well. The Oklahoma City Thunder has always been my team so I like rooting for them. And I like Leonardo DiCaprio too. I like his style and I like those newsboy hats that he wears a lot. I’ve been thinking about wearing some to games this year with my suit. (via GQ)
Matthews seems like he likes to spend some coin on his clothes. He also went on to talk about his favorite brands, which I’d comment on, but they are far to expensive for me to really know anything about.
What are your favorite brands?
I like Gucci a lot. I like Off-White quite a bit. A lot of their shoes and stuff are different and hard to get. Givenchy, I like a lot. Louis Vuitton, I like their luggage and wallets. I tend to lean toward that as far as that goes. I think my number one is Gucci. So style-wise what would be in the Auston Matthews starter pack?
For fragrance, Saint Laurent or Tom Ford. The watch was my first big purchase in my first year. I bought a Rolex Submariner. I had never really owned a nice watch like that and it was a big investment so that’s my go-to. I always wear it when I travel with suits and stuff. Louis Vuitton wallets and Louis Vuitton duffels. Bottega Veneta backpacks. (via GQ)
This kid is living off of a 925k a year salary right now, imagine once he signs that huge ticket that is coming next offseason? Buddy is going to be the biggest baller in the NHL. I talk about it all the time, but I can’t imagine being 21 or 22 years old and getting paid $10m a year. He deserves it. That why he also deserves to dress in these fancy clothes. What a life.
Little weird with the timing of this too, GQ. We just so happened to announce on today’s episode of Spittin’ Chiclets that AM34 will be joining the boys on next Monday’s episode, and then they drop this today? Someone is looking for the chiclets bump. Can’t blame them. You can subscribe to the podcast below.
