The Calgary Flames Are Now The Latest Team To Bring Back A Classic Sweater

It has been a big time summer for throwback sweaters. When Adidas took over the uniforms in the NHL last season, they just went with 2 jerseys for every team outside of teams that were playing in either the Winter Classic or a Stadium Series game. As far as a business plan goes, it was genius because everybody could spend a shit ton of money last year on the new jerseys and now they’re rolling out a ton of alternates for teams this year for people to spend even more money on. I was a little skeptical at first when we heard that Adidas would be taking over the NHL but after a little over a year, those bastards know what they’re doing.

So anyway, this summer we’ve seen a bunch of teams bring back some classics for their alternates this year. The Coyotes, Ducks (to an extent), Devils, Blues, and Canucks have all released throwback jerseys this summer. And now the Flames are bringing back their mustard and ketchup sweater for good.

Now they’ve already brought back this jersey before recently but I think it was only for a few games in the 2016-17 season. I don’t remember if this was actually considered an “alternate jersey” for them that year or if it was just a special 100 year anniversary jersey.

Either way, you can clearly see that this uniform deserves to jump their primary uniforms. The ketchup red on the white ice pops so damn hard. And for a team looking to finally looking to turn the corner, you need to pop. I know it’s cliche but people wouldn’t say “look good, feel good, play good” all the damn time if it weren’t so true. I’m telling you right now. You have 41 home games in the season. If you wear these jerseys for 41 games, you’re winning at least 30 of them and probably closer to 35. It doesn’t matter if the barn is completely empty and you only have a few parents in the stands. Those jerseys alone are enough to give you Vegas-like home ice advantage.

You made your major moves in acquire Noah Hanifin and James Neal this summer. You’ve got guys like Gaudreau and Monahan locked up long-term. We’ll see how much bringing in Bill Peters as the new head coach works out. But on top of all that, you bring these [pun slightly intended] fire jerseys back into the mix. This is a playoffs or bust type of sweater for the Calgary Flames and all it will take for them to be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender is to make it their primary.
