Willson Contreras Pimped A Ball That Didn't Go Over The Fence (Again), Joe Maddon Calls It "Horrible", Says Whole Cubs Team Didn't Like It

Listen, nobody loves watching homers getting pimped more than me. Nobody. But rule number one to pimping a homer is that it has to be a homer. Willson Contreras is now a multi-time offender of the “pimp a home run that isn’t actually a home run” move, which is even worse when you consider that his career high in homers is 21. He’s not even at double digits this year.

It’s not a “respect the game” thing for me like I’m sure it is for somebody like Joe Maddon. For me, it’s simply that he just looks like an asshole for doing it, especially when he’s not necessarily known for being a big home run guy, coupled with the fact that it’s happened more than once. After the first time that he did it, Contreras promised that it was never going to happen again. He promised!

If you’re gonna flip the bat or do a slow walk to first base while you admire your work, the ball has to go over the fence. It just absolutely has to. When I tweeted about Contreras pulling this shit again, the first time being in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the 2016 World Series when the Cubs were losing 6-0, I had Cubs fans getting upset with me.

First of all, Contreras ain’t Manny Ramirez, nor will he ever be. Second of all, Manny pimped his shit ten times better, even when they didn’t go over the fence, which happened once in a great while. Both times that Contreras pimped his non-homer, he scampered into second base like a frantic little idiot. When Manny would pimp a non-homer, he’d just laugh it off because he knows he’s still gonna hit 40 bombs and drive in 130 runs, something Contreras has never come remotely close to doing.

Manny was the king of pimping homers. Homeboy had his batting gloves off before he even left the batters box while the ball was still in the air.
