Brands Getting Wet Over MLB Weather Delays
When the tarp comes rolling out at a baseball game it’s usually a huge downer (unless someone on the grounds crew gets consumed by one in front of thousands of cheering fans in need of a pick-me-up).
That seems to be changing though as brands look to monetize these undesirable game delays. Who doesn’t love marketing, especially in the rain when you’ve already paid a bunch of money. Tonight at a stormy Nationals Park where the team is up 1 – 0 over the Phillies, fans were reminded, “If raindrops were Skittles this wouldn’t be that bad.” Have to admit, pretty smart use of space.
The Skittles tarp has been around all season but it’s not the first to utilize primo ad space. Last year the Yankees went with Glad bags, though I feel that would have been better paired with a garbage team like the Rays.
And the Reds teamed up with Bounty:
Though my advice would have been to make it a little more local:
From my Googling I believe the first team to utilize tarp space was the Cubs in 2015:
Overall, my favorite so far is the Orioles who teamed up with Playtex for super absorbent field protection. Love that they weren’t afraid to embrace their female fans. <3
