NBA Summer Workout SZN: Dennis Smith Jr Edition

Alright Mavs fans, you’re up next. Today we look at this recent video of second year guard Dennis Smith Jr and how he is developing his game this summer. Honestly I have one thing to say when it comes to DSJ, and it’s holy fucking shit. If you watched him play at all last year you knew he could jump, but did you see him in this video? Goddamn pogo stick legs like you read about. This is a guy that has knee issues and tore his ACL a few years ago and actually GAINED inches on his vertical. Did you know DSJ actually had an extra ligament in his knee? It’s what allowed him to come back to quickly after tearing his ACL (he was dunking two weeks after surgery), and is the same thing that Adrian Peterson has in his knee. Anyway, I remember when he got drafted there were some questions about his knee and his longevity, but those for sure should be put to rest by now.

Now unlike some of the other summer workout videos we’ve seen this open gym didn’t look like it was filled with a ton of NBA talent so as always take this for what it’s worth, but if I’m a Mavs fan seeing him get up like this would give me a raging erection. The DSJ/Doncic backcourt is going to be fun as hell to watch, mostly because I see DSJ playing off ball and being on the receiving end of numerous Luka lobs. As a rookie DSJ showed all the signs you want to see out of your starting PG, he averaged 15/3.8/5.2/1.0 in 29.7 minutes a night, while making 1.5 3PM. The one area I expect him to improve on is his efficiency, as he only had 39/31% splits which certainly leaves room for improvement. Obviously one way to help your efficiency is to just dunk on everyone’s face, and it looks like DSJ is ready to do just that.

Personally, if I was looking for tidbits of improvement, I’d much rather see a video of him knocking down like 18 threes in a row or something because I already know he’s an athletic freak. Until that happens though, I think we can all agree watching this dude fly is something else

They may not win a ton of games next year, but I’m for sure going to have the Mavs in my League Pass rotation that’s for damn sure. Breakout year coming from Dennis Smith Jr, I can feel it.
