Yogi Ferrell Pulled A DeAndre Jordan But On A Much Smaller Scale
OK a little background here for those of you who are either not Mav fans, or don’t really pay attention to Free Agency at this point of the summer unless it’s a big name like Melo. Remember a few years ago when DeAndre Jordan committed to Mark Cuban and the Mavs, only to have a change of heart, back out, and sign with a different team? Well that exact same thing just happened with Yogi Ferrell.
Initially, Ferrell agreed to a 2 year $5.3M deal with the Mavs. Given the fact that DAL rescinded his restricted free agency, that’s not a bad get for a bench player (a very good one at that though). Remember Marcus Smart didn’t really have an outside market and was about to play for $6M if not for finally getting an extension with the Celtics. The Mavs were never going to give Yogi Ferrell that type of deal, and seeing as how he made like $1.3M last season, that’s a decent bump. But a few days went by, Farrell never officially signed, and all of the sudden decided to back out. Devastating news for the Mavs I’m sure, and absolutely a risk on his part that he could get more money out there on the open market. Who would possibly beat that Mavs offer?
Why not! Throw Ferrell on the Kings and maybe you get a little Isaiah Thomas magic. Honestly Ferrell is a pretty good backup point guard despite his size, just see for yourself
Sure, maybe the Kings already have this exact player in Frank Mason III who is no slouch himself, but credit to Ferrell for going out there and finding a slight bump from the Mavs offer. Somehow I don’t think DAL is going to be as heartbroken as they were when Jordan did this since they are all set with Dennis Smith Jr, Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson. To be honest this decision was probably best for all involved.
Anyway, that was your insignificant NBA free agent news of the day you didn’t know you needed. You’re welcome.
