Netflix's 'Father Of The Year' A Hilarious And Heartwarming Ride
Growing up, there was no schoolyard debate that EVER got more heated than the “Whose dad could kick whose dad’s ass?” debate. We’ve all been there. We’ve all had it with our friends. Whether your dad was a professional fighter or an accountant in the real world, he was a god damn superhero to you, and an invincible one at that. There was no way ANYBODY or ANYTHING could harm him. A bear? Psh. No way. A bullet, even? Nuh-uh. My dad would disarm the gunman like he was Jason Bourne before he could even think of pulling the trigger. I remember once, my father exclaimed to me that he’d kick “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s ass, who was the WWF Champion at the time, and I didn’t even blink. Of course he could, he’s my dad.
‘Father of the Year’, takes that debate and cranks it up to eleven. No longer fought about in the schoolyard, but now a drunken topic of conversation between best friends after graduating college, “I bet my dad could beat up your dad!” is taken juuuuust a bit too far and everyone’s lives are sent into a tailspin. Jobs are lost, relationships are ruined, houses are destroyed, and chaos ensues in a big, bad way.
Somewhere along the wild ride, though, ‘Father of the Year’ unfolds into a touching father/son comedy we could all relate to. David Spade delivers his best performance yet as Wayne, newcomers Joey Bragg and Matt Shively shine bright, and the jokes hit so hard and so consistently that I’ve got no choice but to put it up there with the best comedies of the year.
