Wake Up With Jason Giambi Hitting A Walk Off Grand Slam For The Yankees

Well folks, it didn’t take Jason Giambi very long to earn his pinstripes. Back in 2002, his first season with the Yankees, he launched this walk-off grand slam to beat Minnesota in the 14th inning of a game in mid-May. Giambi hammered this ball to deep right center in the pouring rain as the Yankees won 14-13. They mention that this was a wild game, and looking back at the box score, it was.

The Yankees scored 1 in the 9th to tie the game at 9 and send it into extras. The Twins scored 3 in the top of the 13th to extend their lead to 12-9. The Yankees started the inning with a Shane Spencer single, Alfonso Soriano flew out, Derek Jeter got a single of his own, and then Bernie Williams drew a walk to load the bases for the Yankees big offseason pick up. Giambi unloaded on the first pitch he saw and ended the game. The home run was Giambi’s 9th of the season, he would finish 2002 with 41 homers and 122 RBIs. Decent debut year for Giambi.

I remember watching Baseball Tonight late night and seeing this update. Giambi was one of those massive guys who its the typical late 90s and early 2000s baseball player. The greasy hair, the bulging muscles, the tape measure home runs, the pimply back from steroids. Giambi was a monster, and to me he was a typical 2000s Yankee. The guy who you enjoyed and liked to root for, then loved to root against him when he eventually joined the Yankees.

Can we also talk about how he had maybe the scariest Sports Illustrated cover ever? I mean why would you ever pitch to this guy?

That is the face of a man who would take your girl, drink your beer, and hit moonshots.
