The Mavs And Hawks Get The Draft Day Trades Started
It certainly didn’t take long for us to get our first big time trade of the night. First, I’m happy for Luka that he doesn’t have to play in Atlanta. I didn’t really care where he went as long as it wasn’t ATL. He deserves better. If you’re Dallas this is a no brainer move, especially because that 1st pick isn’t unprotected. They now have their backcourt of the future with Dennis Smith Jr and Luka Doncic which should definitely be exciting to watch. It’ll be interesting to see just how protected that DAL pick ends up being, if there are heavy protections or if it’s just like Top 1 protected.
This trade really shows the beauty of this whole draft. I can’t ever remember hearing about DAL potentially trading up, but that’s Mark Cuban for you, the guy is always ready to shake things up in order to bring his team back to contention. Luka will now have a great coach to play under in Carlisle and a fanbase that truly cares about the team. Sort of an ideal situation for him if you think about it. I know he’s a ball dominant player and it’ll be interesting to see how that works out with DSJ who is also fairly ball dominant, but it’s hard to not love the move for the Mavs.
For the Hawks, I guess this means they definitely have to find a way to move Schroder and that contract. He should definitely get his shot attempts, but defensively there is no one really on the Hawks roster currently to hide his defensive issues. I was of the thought that Young would be pretty good in the NBA, but I don’t know if it’s possible to shake the stink that is the Atlanta Hawks.
FWIW, it seems like this move by DAL is being well received
