Ranking All The Pixar Movies
Tonight ‘The Incredibles 2’ releases after over a decade-long wait following up the beloved original movie from Pixar. We decided that today is just about the best day to see what you, the audience, think about all 19 of Pixar’s movies. A vote released on our Twitter and Reddit accounts allowed to everyone rank their Top 10 Best Pixar Movies. Here are the results, the definitive audience Best Pixar Movie Rankings (with our ranking for each movie as well). Keep in mind, these are the Best Pixar Movie Rankings and not necessarily the Favorite Pixar Movie Rankings.
Jeff (His Rank: 19): See number 13 above… but also, this is the worst Pixar movie by a mile. The ride at Disneyland is a blast, though.
KenJac (His Rank: 18): Larry the Cable Guy
Jeff (His Rank: 16): Another not terrible entry from Pixar, but egregiously unmemorable and the definition of a mediocre animated movie.
KenJac (His Rank: 16): Just a real nothing movie. Really forgotten in Pixar history
Jeff (His Rank: 14): Meh? Just never did it for me.
KenJac (His Rank: 11): A great movie about female empowerment. I’m still confused how they animated the hair so well.
Jeff (His Rank: 18): See number 13 above.
KenJac (His Rank: 19): Larry the Cable Guy
Jeff (His Rank: 15): I worry that ‘The Incredibles 2’ might fall victim to what ‘Finding Dory’ suffered from with being too similar to the original. Leaving the theater, I was like “hey that was pretty good!” but then I totally forgot about it within a few days. This is where I expected it to be in the audience rankings.
KenJac (His Rank: 7): I totally thought this movie would disappoint because I viewed Marlin as the star and Dory more as a sideshow act. I couldn’t have been happier to be wrong.
Jeff (His Rank: 13): The only prequel in the Pixar library, ‘Monsters University’ is serviceable, with some great moments, but it just very clearly didn’t live up to the success of the original.
KenJac (His Rank: 15): Never lived up to the original really at all.
Jeff (His Rank: 17): I fucking hate these movies. This should’ve been lower, audience.
KenJac (His Rank: 17): Larry the Cable Guy
Jeff (His Rank: 12): This was one of my favorite movies growing up as a kid and was a very admirable effort from Pixar for its second release. There’s nothing wrong with the movie but it just doesn’t really pack the same punch as the best Pixar movies. I have no issue with where the audience placed this one in the rankings. The movies begin to drop off in quality pretty significantly once you hit the bottom six or so in these rankings.
KenJac (His Rank: 14): I mentioned once on the pod that growing up, there were ‘A Bug’s Life’ people who were well adjusted, and ‘Antz’ people who were fucked up. I was the latter.
Jeff (His Rank: 7): My complaints will continue because I fucking love ‘Inside Out’ and will defend the movie for life. I don’t know if the movie just hasn’t marinated enough since release, but I have always viewed ‘Inside Out’ as the most creative Pixar movie.
KenJac (His Rank: 10): It was pretty incredible what they were able to do in this movie as far as conceptualizing emotions into tangible characters. The voice cast brought this movie to another level as well.
Jeff (His Rank: 9): Oh man, this almost feels like a bit of a disservice to the movie, but I am also realizing how great most Pixar movies have been, so some just have to be lower in the rankings by default. We asked the audience what movie food they desired most and the signature ratatouille dish from the movie was high up their list.
KenJac (His Rank: 12): I don’t like Rats. One of many things Dr. Henry Jones and I have in common. It’s a very fun movie though.
Jeff (His Rank: 6): Mark my words, ‘Coco’ will be considered close to a Top 5 Pixar movie as time goes on. In my opinion, it is easily the most emotional movie out of any entry from Pixar. If you have any connection to grandparents or have lost loved ones, the entire last 30-45 minutes of the movie will wreck you. I am glad it is in the audience’s Top 10, but I think it is way too low.
KenJac (His Rank: 4): This is probably (definitely) recency bias, but god damn did I love ‘Coco’. The musical performances were outrageously good and catchy and the storyline was so genuine. God damn you, Grandma Coco!
Jeff (His Rank: 8): Speak of the devil, it’s ‘WALL-E’, folks! An incredibly divisive Pixar movie, largely due to the major lack of dialogue for most of the film, ‘WALL-E’ is a dark and depressing take on the world. The movie was boosted in the rankings mostly by its slew of second-tier Top 10 votes and didn’t receive many 1st, 2nd or 3rd Place votes.
KenJac (His Rank: 6): ‘WALL-E’ was never really my jam, but I always understood that it was objectively a good movie and I loved its message. Also I would very much unironically love one of those floating chairs the future humans had.
Jeff (His Rank: 4): ‘Up’ is probably the most debated Pixar movie along with ‘WALL-E’ when it comes to how people feel about it. I personally love (Academy Award Best Picture Nominee) ‘Up’, but plenty of people think that after the opening scene, the movie becomes unmemorable. Very fair, but I am happy to see it ranked in the Top 10. Our guy Coley from Mickstape said ‘Up’ stinks in our “Disney/Pixar Rankings” episode of Lights, Camera, Podcast.
KenJac (His Rank: 13): One of those movies I understood why people loved, but just never connected with. Blame my dead grandparents!
Jeff (His Rank: 3): One of the best sequels of all time, ‘Toy Story 2’ successfully added a slew of new characters, two villains and was one of the moments where everyone realized Pixar’s success was tough to top. The audience had it a fair amount behind the other two ‘Toy Story’ movie in terms of 1st Place votes, but it was still easily in the Top 10.
KenJac (His Rank: 9): On a whole, movie sequels rarely manage to stay in the same stratosphere as the originals. The ‘Toy Story’ franchise is a perfect example of where that’s not the case. This song is still pretty devastating.
Jeff (His Rank: 10): ‘Monsters, Inc.’ always feels like the most forgotten top Pixar movie. The best Pixar movies creatively play and tug on your imagination, especially from childhood, and ‘Monsters, Inc.’ nailed it. Very respectable Top 5 pick from the audience.
KenJac (His Rank: 5): The dynamic of Billy Crystal and John Goodman was surprisingly hilarious as Mike and Sully. A very classic storyline done pretty damn well.
Jeff (His Rank: 2): ‘Toy Story 3’ might be the best third movie in a trilogy of all time. It actually had the third most 1st Place votes from the audience in the vote. Time to go on a short rant: I can’t believe they’re making a ‘Toy Story 4’ after the incredibly perfect ending in ‘Toy Story 3’. It’s almost better than the original, folks.
KenJac (His Rank: 8): A little more upsetting and guilting than ‘Toy Story 2’, I still enjoyed ‘Toy Story 3’ thoroughly, but it’s tough living up to the original.
Jeff (His Rank: 11): Okay, I love ‘Finding Nemo’, but this one was a pretty big surprise for me to see. Going out on a limb and saying the audience just connected with the sentimental and emotional scenes in this one. You could make an argument this is a more emotional movie than ‘Up’ and its depressing opening scene.
KenJac (His Rank: 2): I think ‘Finding Nemo’ had the effect that ‘Toy Story’ had for me, but for people 7-ish years younger. An amazing and heartwarming story accompanied by the great voice performances of Brooks and DeGeneres.
Jeff (His Rank: 5): While ‘Toy Story’ had double the votes that ‘The Incredibles’ received, it’s still clearly number one for much of the audience. ‘The Incredibles’ is the best ‘Fantastic Four’ movie ever made and one of the best superhero movies, as well. My younger self was a real fucking idiot, because I didn’t appreciate ‘The Incredibles’ until I got older. Where will the sequel land in everyone’s rankings?
KenJac (His Rank: 3): This is my personal favorite Pixar joint and I find it endlessly entertaining. Helen Hunt and Craig T. Nelson were an astoundingly iconic duo and this movie suits all ages. It’s also perfectly paced and tremendously scored with that jazzy soundtrack.
Jeff (His Rank: 1): No shock here. ‘Toy Story’ is always regarded as the best when discussing Pixar movies. It’s a classic, it kicked off decades of great movies and still holds up, even in 2018. It’s wild to me that this movie wasn’t nominated for Best Picture at the 1996 Academy Awards.
KenJac (His Rank: 1): It’s the defining Pixar movie. By far the most well known, well received, and memorable of the bunch by a very wide margin.
