The Newfoundland Growlers, New ECHL Team, Better Have A Live Mascot

Sportsnet – It’s always exciting when a new sports franchise is introduced and its logo is unveiled — even better when it involves a dog.

The ECHL’s newest team was officially introduced to the hockey world Tuesday morning as the Newfoundland Growlers. “Our primary logo is a Newfoundland dog – a large working dog who is known for their size, strength, intelligence and loyalty,” the team wrote in an Instagram post. “The dog in the logo is fierce and stoic to represent the pride and resilience of our province, and our reputation of never backing down from a challenge.

I’ll admit that I don’t keep up with the ECHL as much as I’d like to. But that’s mostly because I’ve never really had a team that I felt I could call my own. Sure, there’s the Reading Royals who are the ECHL affiliate to the Flyers. But they’ve just never really grabbed my attention before. However… now that the Newfoundland Growlers are here? Count me all the frick in.

A little peculiar that the new team essentially has the same colors and similar font style as the Vegas Golden Knights but will be the ECHL affiliate to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

But maybe that’s just because they want to make it to the ECHL Finals next year and it’s a copy cat league. Regardless, that is neither here nor there because the biggest question surrounding this team right now is whether or not the Growlers are going to have a live mascot at their games. Because this is the biggest no-brainer in the history of hockey if you ask me.

You think about Mike The Tiger. You think about Uga. You think about Handsome Dan and Smokey and Bill The Goat. What do they all have in common? They are all stars. These mascots sell out stadiums on a weekly basis. The average ECHL attendance per game is probably somewhere around 4-5,000. The highest average in the league last year was Fort Wayne with 7,784. The lowest was Wheeling with 2,390. This new team in Newfoundland has a chance to not only break some ECHL records here, but shatter them to pieces. All it’s going to take is getting a live newfie mascot and you’ll sell out Mile One Centre game after game after game.
